Charles Dickens Bicentennial Celebration @ The Vienna Library
Event Info:
The Vienna Library is hosting “A Visit from Charles Dickens”. This fast-paced program deals with the writer’s unique connections to western Virginia, and includes sections from his works such as “A Christmas Carol”, “Great Expectations” and others.
Dickens is portrayed by actor/scholar George Bartley (Edgar Allan Poe for the WV Humanities Council’s History Alive). Bartley attempts to recreate what it was like during Dickens’ wildly successful 1842 tour of America. Bartley is a member of the Pittsburgh Dickens Fellowship and has done extensive research into Dickens’ life. “I think one of the most interesting aspects of his tour was that he was treated like a celebrity in America,” says Bartley.
Come to this educational program and help the library celebrate one of the world’s greatest novelists during the bicentennial of his birth.

Exhale Dance Tribe’s “Vinyl” @ The Smoot

On Saturday, February 4th, the Smoot Theatre presents Exhale Dance Tribe’s Production of “Vinyl”. "Vinyl" is a contemporary twist on classic 50s and 60s music. Artistic Directors Missy Lay Zimmer and Andrew Hubbard embrace the classic style of the era and then bring some contemporary elements to the production using symbolism and recurring images from the 50s and 60s. Some of the songs and music used for this production include: Otis Redding’s “These Arms of Mine”, “What’d I Say” by Ray Charles and Joe Cocker’s version of “I Get By With A Little Help of My Friends”. This is sure to be a treat for fans of music and dance alike!
Exhale Dance Tribe is a contemporary jazz troupe comprised of Cincinnati-based performing artists and dance educators. Founded in 2005 by the Artistic Directors Andrew Hubbard and Missy Lay Zimmer, Exhale celebrates the full range of modern and rhythm-based dance and features diverse and versatile performers. Their programs, performances and original choreography speak to the need for expressionistic and multi-lingual dance rooted in rhythmic language and storytelling. The company has been touted by Dance Magazine as one of the “25 to watch” in the United States. Exhale Dance Tribe is a resident company of the Aronoff Center for the Arts in Cincinnati.

This Lecture is part of the 2012 Blennerhassett Winter Lecture Series presented by The Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History, the Blennerhassett Historical Foundation, and Friends of Blennerhassett.
The history talks are educational programs that feature speakers and first-person interpreters on a variety of Ohio Valley/WV topics.
The series consists of five Sunday afternoon programs from Feb. 5-March 4, 2012. Each program will begin at 2pm.

As a special treat the Smoot Theatre Children’s Choir will perform on Feb. 5 and the Smoot Theatre Boy’s Choir on Feb. 26. The performances will be at the museum prior to each history program.

This Lecture is part of the 2012 Blennerhassett Winter Lecture Series presented by The Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History, the Blennerhassett Historical Foundation, and Friends of Blennerhassett.
The history talks are educational programs that feature speakers and first-person interpreters on a variety of Ohio Valley/WV topics.
The series consists of five Sunday afternoon programs from Feb. 5-March 4, 2012. Each program will begin at 2pm.
Light refreshments will be served.
As a special treat the Smoot Theatre Children’s Choir will perform on Feb. 5 and the Smoot Theatre Boy’s Choir on Feb. 26. The performances will be at the museum prior to each history program.

Monday, February 20 from 9:30 until 12:00, children (grades 3-5) are invited to participate in a program focusing on George Washington. Children will examine the myths and legends of our first president and learn about our first president’s contribution to the settling of the Northwest Territory.
This program will include the following activities:
1. Quill writing
2. George Washington was a spy master during the Revolution! Learn how to be a spy.
3. Make your very own powdered wig, although President Washington didn’t wear one. (He actually powdered his own hair.)
4. Surveying
5. The Real George Washington (Did he chop down that cherry tree? Were his teeth really wooden? Did he throw a silver dollar across the Potomac River? And much more.)
6. Dedication of a portrait of Washington and an American Flag that has actually flown over Mount Vernon

Seth Meyers returns for his tenth season on "Saturday Night Live," his fifth season as head writer, and his fifth season as anchor of "Weekend Update."
Before focusing his attention solely on "Update," Meyers was a regular player in sketches, performing numerous characters and impressions, most notably, an uncanny portrayal of Senator John Kerry for the show's satire of the 2004 Presidential election.
A graduate of Northwestern University, he studied and performed at ImprovOlympic (where many SNL cast members and writers got their start) before moving on to the Boom Chicago Theater in Amsterdam, Holland. His acclaimed show "Pick-ups and Hiccups" with partner Jill Benjamin toured Europe and eventually caught the eye of "SNL."
Most recently, Meyers hosted the 2010 ESPY Awards on ESPN & President Obama's correspondents dinner.

Debra will discuss how Americans dealt with the anxiety of the families at home during the Civil War and the staggering losses that resulted from this bloodiest of all the American wars.

This Lecture is part of the 2012 Blennerhassett Winter Lecture Series presented by The Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History, the Blennerhassett Historical Foundation, and Friends of Blennerhassett.
The history talks are educational programs that feature speakers and first-person interpreters on a variety of Ohio Valley/WV topics.
The series consists of five Sunday afternoon programs from Feb. 5-March 4, 2012. Each program will begin at 2pm.

As a special treat the Smoot Theatre Children’s Choir will perform on Feb. 5 and the Smoot Theatre Boy’s Choir on Feb. 26. The performances will be at the museum prior to each history program.

The Official Blues Brothers Revue @ The Smoot

A docudrama was produced several years ago called “Lost in Las Vegas”, the story of two performers trying to survive and raise families in a city whose only value is making money. It caught the attention of Victor Pisano and Judy Belushi Pisano who asked the producers of that film to audition for the stage musical The Official Blues Brothers Revival. “We learned that day how hard it is to do what John and Dan did,” says Judy Belushi Pisano, “…some looked the part but nobody had the whole package until Kieron and Wayne (alias Jake and Elwood) arrived.” The OBBR ran successfully in Chicago in the spring and summer of 2004.
From that show was born The Official Blues Brothers Revue. This live concert show combines the comedy and the hits from the original movie and pays homage to Chicago’s rich history of blues, gospel and soul music. It is performed with the passion and the precision that is the trademark of the original Blues Brothers Band.
Jake, Elwood & The Band hit the right balance of humor, music and mayhem that has captivated audience’s nation wide. Upbeat, and uplifting The Official Blues Brothers Revue is fun for all ages.
